In order to be successful Supervisory Board members, we need to ask the right questions at the proper time of the growth cycle. Drilling management with a barrage of topics will impede the growth of company, and it happens often from good intentions. Understanding, from experience, where and when to probe is the key to successful supervisory board roles. Then when you are on-point, it’s important to challenge the status quo and always have an outside-in approach. Supported by facts and data. What are others doing, and why? What is the benchmark and what factors will influence in the upcoming months.
Is the BHAG clearly defined and known to the organisation? What are the differentiators of the product to the competition? Are you winning, and if not, why?
Is the performance management system clear, effective and linked to company ROCKS? Does middle management empowered, focusing on A players and ready to scale?
Does the organisation prioritise “getting it done” over “planning and preparation”? Do they over deliver regularly on OKRs and other annual ROCKS? What is the sense of urgency throughout the whole organisation?
Does management achieve the financial results they promise on a regular monthly and quarterly basis? Does the company foresee results before they happen and are they constantly surprised?
Is the employee NPS growing more positive quarter after quarter? What governance frameworks are in place to assure a healthy working environment? Is management open for advisory support and willing to take on new challenges?
Does management know what technology trends will disrupt the platform, products or customer in the upcoming 3, 5, or 10 years? Is management aligned on them and what are the antidotes?
